The Problem
Harker School’s Rothschild Performing Arts Center in San Jose, CA, wanted an AV integration for the theater, installation of a 34-foot by 15-foot LED video wall, and gymnasium AV.
Shovels hit the ground in May 2016 to begin this remarkable campus upgrade, which was a collaboration between Studio Bondy Architecture and Kevin Hart Architecture. Theater consultants The Shalleck Collaborative lent their expertise on the design of the auditorium as well as the A/V systems, including the expansive LED wall in the lobby. Acoustical experts Charles M. Salter Associates also worked as consultants to design the acoustics of the auditorium.
PCD’s Approach
PCD’s role includes the installation of a 15-foot-tall LED video wall in the Lobby as well as an audio visual system to support theatrical productions, media presentations and a Gymnasium AV system. To create the right audiovisuals for the space, we worked with some of our favorite brands and products, including Extron, Cisco, OPPO, Apple TV, Middle Atlantic, Yamaha, and more. Timeline and schedule for a project of this magnitude is always a challenge.
PCD’s Solution
Alongside General Contractor Devcon Construction, PCD provided and installed the larger than life 34-foot-wide by 15-foot-tall “digiLED” video wall in the Lobby.
Theater
The 450 seat theater includes installation of Yamaha QL5 multichannel mixing console with 32 faders and 2 master faders, High-end L’Acoustics line array systems, Biamp Tesira DSP, Lab.gruppen C10:8 and E8:2 amplifiers, OPPO UDP-203 Bluray players, and Apple TV. Contemporary Research QMOD-HDTV modulator, Datavideo TLM-702 monitor, Digital Projection E-Vision Laser 8500, Digital Projection M-Vision Cine 930, Epson Brightlink projector, Listen Technologies assisted listening system, Extron touch controls, Sharp PN-LE601 TV, Shure QLXD24/SM58-G50 vocal system, Tascam CD200BT solid state recorder, and a TOA EV-20RPSUS digital message repeater.
Gymnasium
The Gym includes 16-channel Allen & Heath Mixer, Tascam CD player, Shure SM58 vocal system wireless mics, Lab.gruppen C48:4 amplifiers, Digital Projection WUXGA 930 projector and Da-Lite Pro 326D 177” high by 284” wide projection screens, Listen Technologies assisted listening system, and Biamp Tesira DSP. It also includes JBL AM7215/95 loudspeakers for bleacher coverage and JBL AM7215/26 two-way full-range loudspeakers for court coverage.
The Result
Having a hand in creating this unique space has been one of the most dynamic and challenging jobs PCD has completed to date, and the end result is well worth it. In the June 2018 edition of Sound & Communications Magazine, PCD was honored to be featured for our work at Harker School’s Rothschild Performing Arts Center. The article showcases the ways the performing arts center rivals world-class venues thanks to its stunning use of AV technology. This was a truly outstanding project!
